FAQ with Dr. Donna Baldwin-Mickey
What is vision therapy?
Vision therapy is an individualized treatment plan prescribed by a Doctor of Optometry who is trained in vision therapy. It's used to treat eye conditions such as strabismus (eye turn) or amblyopia (“lazy eye”). Through vsion therapy, we can teach, improve and reinforces important visual skills like eye tracking, eye focusing and eye teaming abilities. Without these visual skills, simple tasks like reading or copying notes from the board become difficult. Poor visual skills can also lead to skipping words or lines while reading, frequent squinting or head tilting, double vision, eyestrain and eye fatigue.
How do I know if vision therapy is right for my child?
If your child displays symptoms of strabismus (eye turn), amblyopia (“lazy eye”), or complains or frequent headaches or eye strain, bring them in for a functional visual evaluation. We will happily perform a thorough one-on-one assessment to determine which conditions are present, whether vision therapy is suitable, and the type of eye exercises required.
Why is my child having trouble reading and concentrating on schoolwork?
Your child may have an underlying refractive issue, such as farsightedness, nearsightedness or an astigmatism that maybe be causing blurred vision. These refractive errors make it hard for your child to concentrate and focus. Another possibility is a problem with binocular vision, which is how well the two eyes work together. We will evaluate the child's visual system, including their binocular systems and accommodative systems, to determine if their vision may be playing a role in their academic or sports performance.
